Although each purchase and installation process is unique, there are a number of questions that we are regularly asked by our customers - and we have listed a number of them here. But remember, if you have a question that isn't answered here, please do get in touch. We're happy to help!
Can I lay the flooring immediately after it is delivered?
Wood is a natural product, therefore it needs time to acclimatise to its new environment. We recommend that hardwood flooring be allowed to "breathe" for between 48 and 72 hours. The packages should be opened and left at room temperature during this period.
What tools will I need to lay my floor?
The tools you need will depend on the type of floor you want to lay. Go to our installation instructions page and you can download and print a "Preparation Guide" which outlines the tools and materials you'll need relevant to your choice of floor fitting. You can also have a look at the "related products" which are displayed on each of our products pages. These tools and materials are available to buy here at The Floor Space.
I have under floor heating and would like to fit hardwood flooring. Is there a particular type of flooring suitable for this?
Engineered boards such as those manufactured by Novoloc or Boen are ideal for under floor heating. These can be used as a floating floor, provided that the correct site conditions are fulfilled. We would be delighted to offer more advice on this subject. Simply call our customer services team on 0845 116 1428 or send us an enquiry.
Can you provide any hints and tips on care and maintenance of my floor?
We have provided some very good ideas in our Hardwood Flooring Care & Maintenance section.
When can I expect my floor to be delivered?
We can normally deliver to anywhere in mainland Britain within two to three working days, subject to product availability and credit status. Please check our delivery and returns policy for further details.
Wood floors seem more expensive than, say, laminate or carpet. Are they worth it?
Well, you would expect us to say yes to that one! But don't just take our word for it. According to a survey conducted by the National Wood Flooring Association, estate agents claim that wood flooring holds its value better than any alternative and that houses with wood floors sell faster. The same survey showed that 58% of estate agents believed that houses with wood floors fetch higher prices than carpeted homes.
Can I lay a hardwood floor in "high traffic" areas like hallways?
Yes. Hardwood floors can take a lot of wear and tear, provided they are installed and maintained properly. A hardwood floor should last up to 50 years if cared for properly.
How do I know the number of packs to buy?
Easy. Just go to our floor calculator. Here you can get an overall cost and cost per metre for each specific flooring product.
Can you guarantee that my hardwood floor will match my sample?
If you order the same species of wood as your sample, it will look very similar. However, as wood is a natural product, we cannot guarantee that each floor will match exactly the grain and colour of your sample. That's why a real wood floor looks so beautiful: it's entirely unique to your home.
Is wood flooring hypoallergenic?
Millions of people suffer from sensitivity to chemicals and toxins. Tests by leading allergists have proven that wood flooring provides a healthier environment for these allergy sufferers. Wood doesn't harbour irritating dust and micro organisms.
